RMCC Sermon on Hebrews 10:26-31

I spent over thirty years in the mainstream church, prior to being called to Torah.

Twelve of those years (more recently) were at Rocky Mountian Calvary Chapel in Colorado Springs.
Now that I’ve had a couple years to learn Torah, and just as important, to learn the New Testament scriptures within the context of Torah, I’ve decided to listen to RMCC’s teachings on some of the scriptures that are critical evidence of Torah in the New Testament.

Hebrews 10:26-31
26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. And again, “The Lord will judge His people.” 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Here is what I understand of this now…
-If we willfully sin, Messiah’s sacrifice no longer remains for us.
-Instead, we can fearfully expect judgement
-and fiery indignation
-which will devour the adversaries (we get the same awful fate)
-anyone who rejects the law of Moses
-will die without mercy
-based on 2 or 3 witnesses
-those who trample the Son of God
-will be worthy of worse punishment
-because they consider the blood of Messiah a common thing
-and insulted the Spirit of grace (forgiveness) that He gave
-Vengeance belongs to Yahuah
-and He will judge
-it will be fearful to be on His wrong side.

This bit of scripture is so very obvious.
If we intentionally and willfully continue to sin, we will no longer be forgiven for our sins.
The punishment for doing so will be awful.
Before going on, how does scripture define sin?

1John 3:4 9 [in four different common translations]
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. (King James Version)

Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. (NIV)

Everyone practicing sin also practices lawlessness—indeed, sin is lawlessness.  (TLV)

Everyone who keeps sinning is violating Torah — indeed, sin is violation of Torah. (CJB)

Yes, that’s right. New Testament scripture defines sin as transgressing the law, transgressing the instructions given in the Torah.

Here is a transcript of RMCC’s recent sermon (in orange) on this bit of scripture. The twisting, and assumptions, and the lies that come from the twisting and assumptions blow me away. But I am only several years removed from thinking and believing the same things.
I am grateful to have been called, to have my veil lifted (2Cor 3:14-16).

I know this pastor at Rocky Mountain Calvary Chapel. He is a wonderful guy. He is not malicious in anyway that I know. But he is veiled. He loves and practices a lie, just as Revelation 22:15 warns us of, regarding those who will not be in the Kingdom.
He violates the very words of Messiah in Matthew 5 and Matthew 7. [the consequences are that Messiah will not know you, and will send you away]
He violates the warning given in 2Peter 3:14-17, with regard to the teaching of Paul’s writings, and the rest of the scriptures [the consequences are your destruction].

Please pray for this pastor, this whole church, and the entire mainstream church ‘system’.
They are all in danger, if we are to believe the warnings in scripture.

Transcript:
Hebrews 10:26 ~~ 26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,

This verse is really dangerous if you study it just by itself and it is not in context with the whole book of Hebrews. Because when we think of the willful sin of the book of Hebrews, what is it? It is to reject the finished work of Jesus Christ, to trust in your own works through the law. That’s what this church was facing. That’s the willful sin after they received the knowledge of the truth to leave the sacrifice of Christ to go back under the law, then there no longer remains a sacrifice for sin.
I like the way that David Guzik put this in his commentary. He says, “In a sense every sin is a willful sin, but here the writer of Hebrews speaks of something much more severe and relevant to these discouraged Jewish Christians, who contemplated a retreat from a distinctive Christianity in a return to Judaism with its sacrificial system.”
This is turning your back on Jesus and we see this in the next few verses as well.

Hebrews 10:27-29 ~~ but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.

This is exactly what would take place, these Hebrew Christians stopped trusting in the New Covenant and went back underneath the law.  They would be trampling the Son of God underfoot.  What do you put under your feet?  Something that you don’t value. So they are saying, “I don’t value Christ, i don’t trust in His finished work anymore.”
The blood of the covenant is put under their feet, and they insult the spirit of grace.  So faith values Christ and that’s the lesson of verse 29, is if we have faith and we’re going to live by faith and we’re going to value Christ.
Hebrews 10:30 ~~  30 For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,”says the Lord. And again, “The Lord will judge His people.”

In verse 30, what ultimately brings God’s judgement upon a person? It’s the rejection of Christ.  It’s to count Christ as a common thing, to say, “I don’t need Christ anymore in my life, or I’ve never needed Christ,” and in that case “vengeance is Mine”.  God says that He will judge His people.

Hebrews 10:31 ~~  31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

So faith values Christ but also faith displays a Godly fear.  You know, it should cause us fear and trembling if we were to stand account before god, apart from Jesus.  The book of Proverbs teaches us over and over again that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.  I’ve been reading the Proverbs lately and it really stands out to me, that the awe of God and the respect of God.So faith values Christ and faith also displays this Godly fear.

It has been on my heart to go back and study the sermons of key scriptures.  I am not doing this to mock the church, or to make fun of them, or to say they are condemned.
I’m doing this to test all things.
I want to try to understand where they are coming from, and test where they are coming from against scripture.
If we take a look at his final comments on this section of scripture, it is a garbled mess and is incoherent.
Did he just misspeak?
Or did he fizzle out in confusion?
I don’t know, but I do know it ended poorly, as if he isn’t even sure he believes this stuff.

So, bottom line…
What is my point?
My point is this:
There are people in this world who I know personally, who reject the truth of scripture.  Not only that, but they teach others (in this case, thousands of others) ideas and concepts that violate the words of Yahuah and the words of Messiah.
They need our prayers.
They are still veiled from the truth, just as 2Corinthians chapter 3 describes.  How do they become unveiled? By turning their hearts to Him.

2Cor 3:14-16
14 But their minds were hardened. For up to this very day the same veil remains unlifted at the reading of the ancient covenant, since in Messiah it is passing away. 15 But to this day, whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their heart. 16 But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.

Pray for our mainstream friends and family to turn to Yahuah, so that their veils might be lifted.  As for now, they turn to the teachings of men.  If you want to know what Messiah thinks of that, please read Matthew 23. It is not pretty…
